Aims and Objectives
ESPASSA aims to identify specific areas of targeted research that could lead to poverty alleviation outcomes in the South Asian region.
The Situtaion Analysis being prepared by ESPASSA will:
-
Identify and analyze for the South Asian countries
(1) the regional ecosystem services most important to the wellbeing of the poor
(2) the main threats to the ecosystems that provide these services, with a special emphasis
on climate change and monsoon variability
(3) key ecosystem management opportunities for maximizing poverty alleviation
-
Propose specific areas of targeted research that could lead to poverty alleviation outcomes in the region
-
Identify innovative and effective dissemination strategies for research outputs to be aimed at a range of target audiences throughout the region
-
Assess future information and knowledge needs for policy makers and international organisations to inform policy change and enable better ecosystem management
-
Propose strategies for skills and knowledge exchanges to strengthen the capacity of developing country partners resulting in the development of a ‘critical mass’ of research expertise.
The outputs from the Situation Analysis will provide a comprehensive strategic understanding of the relationship between poverty and ecosystem services within the region and may be used to inform and guide the development of the regional projects, under the proposed next phase of the Ecosystem Services and Poverty Alleviation Programme.
